Maria Montessori’s original observations of children, over one hundred years ago, stand true today: that children are naturally good, naturally peaceful, and naturally motivated to learn. The scientific principles of observation, analysis, reflection and action helped her to develop specific materials and curriculum that are grounded in child development. Today, the principles that Montessori spoke about have been backed up by brain science, and we know that hands-on, individualized, learning supports students’ growth. When thoughtful and caring adults create an environment in which children can make choices for themselves, make mistakes, and support one another, we believe that they will grow up to be community members who are confident, compassionate, and engaged.
